How To Transition Lipsticks From Winter To Spring

Saturday, 28 February 2015

Revlon and Stilla

Recently I was looking through some of my winter lipsticks and realized that I hadn’t got as much use out of some of them as I would have liked. What a shame! Some were really quite pretty and I wished I still had more time to wear them (without delaying spring of course!).

I knew that I couldn’t be the only one in this predicament. So over the last couple of days I’ve been trying to find the best way to get some extra use out of them before spring has well and truly arrived. I came up with a very simple and easy solution.

The solution:
1. Apply a light layer of a more neutral lipstick
2. Apply a light layer of a brighter or more colourful lipstick on top

I tried this using the Revlon Colorburst Lipstick in Rosy Nude and the Stilla Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Aria.

First I applied the Revlon lipstick.
Then I layered the Stilla lipstick on top.

I know this may not be revolutionary (and likely many people have already tried this) but I was quite pleased with the results and thought it would be nice to share this little tip. :)

If you have any tips on transitioning lipsticks from winter to spring please let me know!

The BEST Drugstore Concealers

Monday, 23 February 2015

(Left: COVERGIRL Ready Set Gorgeous in Fair, Right: NYX Incredible Waterproof Concealer in Porcelain)

Finding a good concealer can be tricky business. Finding a good concealer that doesn’t break the bank can be even trickier.

After years of searching I can finally (and proudly) say that I’ve found two drugstore concealers that do just that.

So in the name of concealers that work wonders and don’t break the bank, I’m sharing these with you today!

Having paler than average skin, for me the hardest part is finding a concealer that suits my skin tone. Normally I’m faced with ( …faced with ;) ) concealers that have too much of a pink under tone. Sure the spot I was trying to conceal is covered but how am I supposed to cover the giant pink splotch left by the concealer!?

As you have probably already inferred, I don’t have this problem with either of these concealers (Yay!), they match my skin tone perfectly.

The major difference between these two products lies in their formulas. Their individual consistencies gives them each unique advantages and disadvantages. So I find myself using them for different reasons.

NYX Incredible Waterproof Concealer in Porcelain

Consistency:
Thick and creamy (it’s basically a packaged stick of concealer).

Pros of its consistency:
It’s better at covering up darker/more pronounced spots. I also don’t need to apply as many coats.

Cons of its consistency:
The thicker formula makes it harder to blend. I usually have to wait for it to warm up on my skin before I can actually blend it fully.

COVERGIRL Ready Set Gorgeous in Fair

Consistency:
It's similar to a creamy liquid.

Pros of its consistency:
It is very easy to blend and takes no time to apply.

Cons of its consistency:
It doesn’t cover darker or larger spots as well as the NYX concealer.

There are pluses and minuses to each but overall they work very well and l love them both.

I honestly couldn’t pick a favourite. Which one I end up using really just comes down to what I’m trying to conceal and how much time I have!

If you know of any other great drugstore concealers please let me know! I’m always interested in trying a new concealer :)

My Most Worn...Sweaters!

Thursday, 19 February 2015

grey and beige sweaters

It‘s still well below freezing where I live and this sweater weather doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.

So I’ve decided to embrace it by sharing my most worn sweaters!
(Because fashion is always a good distraction :) )

These sweaters have a clean minimalistic look, making them seem slightly more on the dressy side of casual. Also, they both look great with jeans and boots. Letting you look more put together even if you did just throw them on in the morning!

The first sweater, by Joan Vass, was purchased earlier this year. The first thing I love about this sweater is that it has a tiny rolled collar so that it’s almost like a mini turtleneck (who doesn’t love being stylish and warm :) ?). The second thing is the shape. It's basically four panels: the front and back panels are the shape of an elongated hexagon and the side panels are more triangular shaped. I think this gives the sweater a cool geometric look.

The second sweater, by Theory, was purchased quite a few years ago. The alternating sizes of stripes and the button detailing down the side really sets it apart from other more generic stripped sweaters. One of my favourite things about this sweater is that I am able to wear fall, winter and spring. Making it not only one of my current most worn sweaters…but one of my most worn sweaters of all time!

I can’t wait for spring but for now I’m doing my best to make the most out of the last bit of winter :)
